Captain “Tommy” Laing began his maritime career in 1959 as a deckhand aboard various fishing trawlers on the United States Gulf Coast. He apprenticed from 1963 to 1964 as a ship-fitter at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He transitioned in 1965 as a deckhand aboard offshore oil field service and towing vessels. He was promoted to Mate in 1966 and then to Captain in 1967. Later in 1970 he was advanced to shore side management as Port Captain for that and later a larger offshore service vessel company.
   From 1970 to 1982, Captain Tommy studied Maritime Insurance Law at Louisiana State University, Welding Trades at Texas Southmost College, Leadership and Public Speaking through the Dale Carnegie course, and Ship Stability with the National Cargo Bureau while operating a marine surveying practice as well as a commercial fishing vessel topside repair and net shop. During this time he was also active with Texas A&M Sea Grant doing fishing gear research and later served on the industry advisory group, helping draft what was to become the Gulf Coast Fishing Vessel Safety Manual.

Captain Tommy acquired his first USCG license in 1967, since then also acquiring Able Seaman, Life Boatman, Wiper, and Steward credentials. He currently holds a License as Merchant Marine Master 1600- Ton Registered / 3000-Ton License. He has attended the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch Keeping (STCW-95) Safety and Basic Shipboard Firefighting training.
